U19 Nationals  2013

Verses QE II

The Marist U19 women's team started their tournament with a great win against the ladies from the Deep South.  They created many opportunities to put goals in net and scored 19/38 shots. Ricci lead from the front with her speed scoring 6 of the team goals.  Annabel and Charlotte backed her up well each scoring 3 goals.   For the first game the girls played well together and look to improve in the next.  Jess played well in goal with a great 5m block.

Final score: 19-6
Scorers: Ricci 6, Charlotte 3, Annabel 3, Katrin 2, Eleanor 2, Jordan 2, Aimee 1

Verses Tauranga

The team looked to build upon their game from this morning and once again were given lots of opportunities to shoot.  Tauranga defence lacked purpose and struggled to cope with the speed of the Marist team.  The ladies communicated well and this was evident with the number of assists in the game, in particular from Rachel.  Ricci and Charlotte combined well and again worked hard on attack for the team each scoring 5 goals.  Katrin shot at every opportunity and was rewarded with 4 goals. New team member Bella Crossan had a great game scoring 3 goals.  Another relatively easy game for the ladies with a nice win.

Final score: 20-3
Scorers: Ricci 5, Charlotte 5, Katrin 4, Bella C 3, Farrah 1, Annabel 1, Jordan 1.

Verses Waikato

This morning proved to be much needed and harder opposition for the Marist team.  The pace of the game was much slower and more structured with Waikato putting pressure on the team and slowing down the counters.  Again Rachel, Annabel and Bella supported the team to shoot better options through some great assists.  Jordan worked hard in this game and put 5/6 shots into the goal while Charlotte and Annabel H continued their consistency in the team each scoring 2 goals each.  Our accuracy in this game however was not as successful as our other 2 games, as the Waikato goalie made several great blocks.  We managed to score 1/3 goals and will need to be more accurate this afternoon against Harbour City.  Ariana played well in goal and made several great blocks for us.

Final score: 12-1
Goal Scorers: Jordan 5, Annabel H 2, Charlotte 2, Ricci 1, Katrin 1, Aimee 1.

Marist Red U19 Womens vrs Waitakere Diamonds - Sunday 7th July

This evening the ladies played a more structured game to beat the Waitakere team after a much tighter game in the first round.  Despite the loss of a couple girls to the NZ team, the girls played well, supporting each other with great passes and strong defence.  Communication between the girls and support for each other was evident throughout the game.  Jess blocked well in the 2nd half and shut down opportunities for Waitakere to score.  Jordan, Ricci and Charlotte once again lead the goal scoring charge while Rachel and Asha adding to their goal tally.  Marist ladies won convincingly 16-3.

1st: 5-2, 2nd: 7-2, 3rd: 11-3, 4th: 16-3
Goal Scorers: Jordan 7, Ricci 3, Charlotte 3, Rachel 2, Asha 1

Marist Red Womens U19 verses Waitakere Sapphires - Saturday 29 June

Tonight the ladies played much better despite having 4 of their players missing.Ricci got the score ticking when she received a lovely cross pass from Charlotte and shot in front of the goal.  Ricci then stole the ball and threw a long pass down the pool to Jordan who took 2 quick strokes before she shot.  Ricci continued to hassle the opposition and stole another from in front of the Waitakere goal, swam the whole length of the pool and bounced the ball into the goal.  The next goal was from a 6-5 when Ricci sent a cross court pass to Aimee who shot to the top right of the goal.  Jordan finished the first quarter attack when she scored a 5m from an exclusion she had received.  Marist 5-0

The ladies continued the pace in the second quarter when Jordan received a nice pass into hole and shot in the opposite direction the goalie was travelling putting the goal into the top left hand corner.  Jordan then stole, threw quickly to Charlotte who ably assisted Rachael for the next goal.  Rachael in turn threw a nice pass into Ricci for her 3rd goal as she drove to the front of the goal and popped the ball into the back of the net. Asha followed with a nice hard shot to the left hand corner. Jordan then popped in a nice cross cage centre forward goal. Marist 10-0.

The attack started quickly in the 3rd quarter when Charlotte shot a 5m after Ricci received a penalty.   Ricci then went on to score her 4th goal of the game after she drove into the front of the goal from the right side of the pool and received a timely pass from Jordan.  Charlotte followed up with another great goal after following up on a bar deflection shot of the goal by Ricci.  Jordan then shot her 5th and final goal after some great communicating between her and Ricci the whole game.  Charlotte then received her 3rd goal of the quarter after Ricci received a long pass from Ariana and threw into charlotte who ensured she put it into the net.. 15-0

Waitakere received their lone goal in the final period and Ricci ended with the final and her 5th goal for the team ensuring the team won 16-1.

Marist Red Womens U19 verses Mountford - Friday 28 June

Tonight the ladies although winning the game, struggled to play and execute very few good moves.  Many opportunities at goal were missed with the ladies converting 8 from 32 attempts.  They started very slowly in the first half of the game and it was only in the 4th quarter that they managed to pull away from Mountford and win comfortably.

Marist Red Womens U19 verses North Harbour - Friday 21 June

As usual the game between Marist and Harbour proved to be a hard fought physical battle.
Unfortunately the Marist girls didn't start well with 5 poor passes in the 1st quarter.  North Harbour capitalised on these errors and managed to lead 4-1 at the end of the 1st quarter with a lone goal to Rebecca Dreadon.
The 2nd quarter, Marist put pressure on Harbour to slow down their scoring only allowing them a single goal.  The 3rd quarter Marist worked hard against their opposition but struggled to have calls go their way.  The ladies never gave up and despite their frustrations they continued to fight their way back into the game with both Rebecca and Ricci shotting two great goals to keep them within reach of Harbour.  Marist went into the final quarter 3-7 down.  The final quarter Rebecca once again put another goal on the scoreboard while Annabel added the final goal, but it was a little to late.  The ladies went down 5-8 to what was a very challenging, physical encounter.

1st:  1-4, 2nd: 1-5,  3rd: 3-7, 4th: 5-8 Goal Scorers: Rebecca 3, Annabel 1,  Ricci 1.

Sunday saw a closer game.  The ladies started well with goals to Annabel, Ricci, Asha and Jordan.  Mountford scored their only goal of the game in this quarter.  The defence of the team gave Mountford very little opportunity to attack and put up goals.  Marist continued to slowly add to the score throughout each quarter.  Annabel and Rebecca shot accurately with 3 goals each and Ricci and Charlotte each added 1 to bring the final score to 11-1.

2013 NZWP Calendar Alterations and Addition

In an effort to keep players playing water polo beyond the under 18 age grade level, NZWP has made the following changes to the 2013 calendar

  • the Under 18 age grade is to be extended to under 1
  • a new NZ Open Championship tournament for 20 year olds and above has been added to the playing calendar. This year to be played in Auckland between 13th – 15th July. (Clubs will be asked to nominate its top 5 National League players who will not be eligible to play in the NZ Open.)

It is hoped that these new initiatives will mean that those players that do not normally play National League after under 18 will continue to be involved in the future.

2012 National League

U18 National Championships concluded yesterday with Marist women taking away the silver medal. The team played North Harbour A in the final of a competition that had seen many teams vying for the finals spot against North Harbour. Marist had played North Harbour on the first day of competition and had lost 18 - 7, so were a little tentative about a rematch on finals day. However, the girls brought their best game to the pool and played an excellent finals game. Although Harbour raced out to a 4-0 lead in the first 4 minutes, Marist remained focused and kept fighting. The score at the end of the first quarter was 5-2 to Harbour. The second quarter saw Harbour take the lead out to 10-5, but Marist fought back in the third quarter and played some solid defence to narrow the margin to 10-7. In the end, Marist couldn't make up the early deficit of the first quarter and lost the match 12-8. A great performance for what is a very young team. This was the last age group nationals for Charlie and Rosie, we wish them all the best with their future water polo. A big thanks to Gabby Crothall for being assistant coach. A special mention to our amazing coach Nicole Lewis, who stepped in to coach at short notice at the beginning of the season and who did a great job, thanks Nicole. ... L.Ferigo

2012 Auckland League

Sunday 19th August

Tonight the Marist U18 Women played their first game in the Auckland League.  The opposition was North Harbour A, the winners of the Pan Pac U18 division which was held in July.  Marist did not meet North Harbour in Pan Pacs, so were a little unsure of how the game would go.  With new coach Nicole Lewis on deck, and  a few changes to the Pan Pacs line up, the Marist girls played a tight defensive game to keep North Harbour working hard. Goalies, Jess and Alice made many great saves, but Marist  lacked pace at crucial times to steer off Harbour's counter attacks.   A nice swim in goal from Charlotte Valentine, a long 6 on 5 shot from Rachael Monkhouse and a set piece goal from a time out, from Charlotte, assisted by Simone Couvee, made up Marist's 3 goals.  Final score 6-3 loss.   Thinking of you Amy Logan in Spain! ... Friday 6th July

Four of the silver medal winning U20 Marist women team members, donned their togs again today to begin their U18 campaign.   Marist U18 drew 8 all with Mountfort Park at Westwave this morning.   In the first two minutes , Charlie Wilkinson scored almost identical goals to put Marist 2 up.   Mountfort Park scored the next 4 goals, one from a five metre, but the balance from lapses in defense by the Marist girls.  Early in the second quarter , Hutt loan player , Kate  Enoka scored a 6 on 5 and then Charlie scored another long shot to put us even.  The score at half time was 5 all.  The third quarter was fraught with missed shots and Marist becoming complacent with Mountfort's slow travel down the pool.  Elise Janseen scored Marist's only goal in this quarter from a great shot out past 5 metres, leaving Marist trailing 6-7 going into the last quarter.   Mountford went two out to 8-6 with 3 minutes to go, but goals from Kate and NZU16 player Olivia Tairua Doyle, saw Marist even up the score.  A missed 6 on 5 opportunity by Marist left the scoreboard at 8 all.   It was a good first outing for a team that hasn't played together before, with some great saves by goalie Alice Johnson.  Goal scorers, Kate 3 , Charlie 3, Elise, Olivia ...
