Rotorua Development Tournament

Sunday 26th August

The Marist U14 boys development team took part in a tournament in Rotorua over the weekend.  This was a mixed team - some had only just started playing water polo and some had previously established skills.  Despite no wins over the course of the weekend, there were some hotly fought games and by the end, all had improved hugely and they played their hearts out in the final game.  Special mention for great playing goes to our goalie - Ethan Tomaszyk, and our goal shooters - Jake Parker Allen, Keith Spencer-Edgar, Alex McDonald and Kane Smith.  However, all goals scored were very much team efforts and all contributed well.  Most valuable player for our team was Jake Parker Allen and most improved player was Ollie McMillan.  Thanks to Blake Chandler, our coach ...J.French - manager

Finals Night – Monday, 9 July 2012

Marist Red U14 Boys vs Waitakere Gold U14 Boys

Marist Red met Waitakere Gold in a nail biting final tonight to come out winners of the 2012 U14 Boys Pan Pacific Festival.  Having drawn with Waitakere 5-5 in the first game of our Pool it seemed fitting to be facing them again in the last game of the tournament – The Final!

Marist scored the first goal of the game with Waitakere leveling soon after but our boys had the final say of the first quarter finishing 2-1 up.

A great second quarter from our boys saw us 4-2 ahead at half time, but by the end of the third quarter we were all tied up at 5-5.

Into the final quarter we went, fast and furious and with 16 seconds to go we were 6-7 down.  Coach Kieran called Time Out and a smart game plan by Kieran and Tim saw Cooper lobbing the ball into the net to level the score at 7-7.

Our boys were ecstatic. They entered the first half of extra time pumped and ready to fight for the win.  Back and forth the ball went but no-one could score and we were still tied up at 7-7.  The second half of extra time saw timeouts called by both sides.  It was nail biting and after extra time we were still tied at 7-7 and a penalty shootout was to decide the winner.  The crowd were treated to a magnificent final and the Marist supporters, Red team boys, Coaches and Manager were all rewarded with the win coming out on top with 4 goals to 3.  Final game score 11-10 to Marist Red.

What a final!  What a game!  Well done Marist Red boys, you have done us all proud.  It was great to see the boys all standing tall with their gold medals and to see our wonderful goalie, Scott, being awarded MVP of the tournament.

Great result by a great bunch of boys led by an outstanding coach, Kieran Hattie.

Monday 9th July

Marist Red U14 Boys vs North Harbour A U14 Boys – Semi Final
An action filled semi this morning saw Marist Red U14 Boys come away with a convincing win to secure a place in tonight’s final.

A tight first quarter with lots of ball but too many missed shots saw us trailing 1-0.  A much better second quarter but again we couldn’t find the back of the net until a great shot from Josh saw us level the scores and finish at half time 1-1.  The boys lifted their game in the third quarter capitalising on a 6 on 5 with a great shot from Ryan M to make the score 2-1.  North Harbour came back and we finished the third quarter 2-2.  The boys dug in deep and showed great determination with 2 goals from Isaac to put us 4-2 up.  Drama followed with the North Harbour goalie being rolled and red carded and our boys took charge of the game securing their place in the final with a 4-2 win.

Impressive blocking from Scott the goalie and outstanding defence from Jordan.  Also worth a mention are two brilliant steals from Sam and a fantastic team effort and attitude by our Marist Red boys.

The team face Waitakere Gold tonight in the Final at 7.15pm  Go Marist Red!

Sunday, 8 July – Quarter Finals

Marist Red U14B vs Marist Blue U14B

With Pool games finished and Marist Red finishing second in their Pool, the boys found themselves facing an all Marist affair coming up against our Marist U14 Blue boys in the Quarter Finals.  What a great game it was with the Red boys fired up and putting in a much better performance than their morning game!  The Blue boys put on a valiant display but the Red team were just too big and strong to take away the win off the back of a big team effort.  Some great steals were made by Ollie, Isaac and Josh and Sam made a great goal saving block.  Top scorers were Isaac with 5 goals, Ryan M with 3 goals and Josh and Cooper with 2 goals.  The Red team came away with a convincing 17-3 win and now face North Harbour A in the Semi Finals.  Good luck Red boys and good luck also to our Blue boys in their 5/6 Play-offs.

Sunday 8th July - Game 6

Marist Red U14B vs North Harbour B U14B
Marist was a little slow to get going, but once did it was an athletic game.
Lots of back & forth, up & down the pool.  Marist defense was great, pushing the attackers away from the goal area.  The teamwork was superb with nicely placed passes for players to move onto the ball.  Fraser played very well on both offense and defense, getting some great steals.  Top Marist scorers were Nick, Ryan G, Cooper & Issac.  The final score was an 11-1 win to Marist.

Sunday 8th July 2012 (game 5)

Marist Blue U14Boys (Pool A)
Opposition: Waikato
Score: 5-4 Win to Marist Blue

It was all on the line for Marist Blue in their last pool game on Sunday morning. A win or draw against Waikato would see Marist through to the top 6 playoffs.

The teams were very evenly matched through the first quarter, with the teams trading shots but no goals and the score was 0-0 at quarter time.

The furious pace continued in the second quarter but it was Waikato who broke the deadlock mid-way through the quarter. However on the stroke of half-time Marist scored through Calum de Jager and the teams were tied at 1-1.

If anything the intensity lifted in the second half. However this time it was Marist who broke through first through Thomas Fink-Jensen. The teams then traded further goals with Waikato capitalising on a 6/5 opportunity, Hamish Waddell scoring for Marist and then Waikato finished the third quarter with an equaliser to leave the scores at
3-3 at three-quarter time.

In the first minute of the fourth quarter Ben Fleming got the go-ahead goal for Marist, only for Waikato to pull one back two minutes later and the teams remained deadlocked at 4-4.

However with 1:10 left on the clock Jake Blundell scored what turned out to be the decisive goal for Marist. Waikato tried hard to come back into the game but staunch defence saw Marist through to the win and a top 6 playoff game on Sunday night.

Saturday 7 July – Game 5

Marist Red U14B vs Tauranga U14B
What a game! Furiously paced and excitement galore. The boys played cohesively as a team, supported each other and demonstrated some great strategic play. Isaac displayed some great 'stealing' work and Scott deserves recognition for his fabulous goal keeping. There was huge Marist spectator support and they were on the edge of their seats. The teams were tied after the first two quarters, lost the third quarter after three quick goals from Tauranga and finished with a scoreless last quarter. The top Marist scorer was Ryan M and the game ended in a loss to Marist 5-8.

Saturday 7th July – Game 4

Marist Red U14B vs Otago U14B
Great win by the Marist Red team who strung it all together to come away with a convincing win.  What a fabulous team Otago is. The game was a bit of a thrashing, but Otago never dropped their lip and fought to the very last second. The final score was a 27-3 win to Marist.

Saturday 7th July 2012 (game 4)

Marist Blue U14Boys (Pool A)
Opposition: North Harbour A
Score: 13-0 Win to North Harbour A
It was a very tight start to the second game on Saturday for Marist Blue against North Harbour. The first quarter was characterised by close marking and having to defend two 6/5 situations. Unfortunately by the end of the first quarter the pressure told and the team was down 0-2.

North Harbour came out strongly in the second quarter as well and tight defence and errors under the pressure led to frequent turnovers.
Before they knew what had happened Marist was facing a 0-6 deficit at half-time.

The second half started in much the same fashion with North Harbour scoring off the first possession as then again 20 seconds later. For the next few minutes the game was more even but soon the game flowed back in North Harbour's to such an extent that at three-quarter time the score had ballooned out to 0-11.

In the fourth quarter the team switched to a 5 man defense with a seagull, in an attempt to defend the goal while setting up for a long break. Relative to the first three quarters the tactic was reasonably successful, with more shots on goal and an unsuccessful attempt to convert a 6/5 opportunity. Ultimately however North Harbour finished stronger and scored two more goals to close the game out 13-0.

Depending on the result of the final game on Sunday against Waikato, the team is still in the running for a third place finish in Pool A with the prospect of a semi-final at stake. If they turn up with their top game they stand a good chance.

Saturday 7th July 2012 (game 3)

Marist Blue U14Boys (Pool A)
Opposition: Maranui
Score: 8-4 win to Maranui

After winning their two games on Friday, Marist Blue headed into Saturday with some confidence.

Marist Blue had a slow start to the game, going down 3-0 inside the first three minutes. They pulled one goal back through Hamish Waddell but on the stroke of quarter time Maranui scored again.

Marist came back in the second quarter with a goal to George Witana but couldn't convert a 6/5 and some other good opportunities before Maranui scored again and took their 5-2 lead into halftime.

Having tended to shoot from too far out in the first half, coach Tim Hunt gave the team the word to get into better formation nearer the goal before shooting and to make better use of the shot clock. However it was Maranui who opened the scoring in the second half and then scored again to take it to 7-2.

A goal from Jordan Wright closed out three-quarter time with the score at 7-3 but the game was effectively lost at that point.

After yet another Maranui goal took the lead to 8-3, Marist did convert a long shot by Ben Fleming to close out the scoring at 8-4.

A slightly disappointing game for Marist with many shots hitting the woodwork, rushed shots without using the shot clock and too many taken from too far out. Hopefully they will take the experience of this game forward and pick up the pace in game 4 this afternoon.
... K.Fink-Jensen

Saturday 7th July – Game 3

Marist Red U14B vs Harbour City Hawks U14B
Great game by Marist. Josh was the pace man, furiously racing up & down the pool. Excellent defensive game played by Marist, Sam worked particularly well in this area getting some great steals. Dom scored an awesome goal & Scott, the goalie, impressed all with a lob from his goal to score at the end of Q2. Marist top scorer was again Isaac and the game ended in a 13-2 win for Marist.

Friday 6th July 2012 (game 2)

Marist Blue U14Boys (Pool A)
Opposition: Waitakere Teal
Score: 7-4 win to Marist Blue

Incredible performance by the Blue team to recover from a 3-1 loss at half time in this game.  Benjamin Fleming showed his style scoring most goals while Jake Blundell and Jordan Wright also added points to the score.  The Blue team is to be commended for their hard work hanging in there under pressure.  Their ability to execute coach Tim Hunt’s moves meant they were able to successfully punch above their weight against this tough opposition.
... T.De Jager

Friday 6th July 2012 (game 1)

Marist Blue U14Boys (Pool A)
Opposition: Hutt
Score: 11-3 win to Marist Blue

Fantastic start to the tournament with this group playing very well as a team.  Goals scored by half the team with Hamish Waddell and Tom Moulder showing best accuracy. Three other team members helped set up goals and the goalie, Ethan Tomaszyk prevented no less than six opposition goals.
... T.De Jager

Friday 6th July – Game 1

Marist Red U14B - Waitakere Gold U14B
The tournament opened with a lacklustre performance by Marist. The team struggled to work cohesively, although they came together more as the game progressed to score some exciting goals. Marist made a good effort to stay with Waitakere which led to a 5 all draw. Scott, the goalie, made some impressive saves. The Marist top scorer was Isaac Orchard with Cooper Stewart and Ryan McEwen also scoring. ...

Friday 6th July – Game 2

Marist Red U14B - Canberra Academy U14B
This second game proved to be an exciting and physical match. Marist played much better and showed some beautiful teamwork and assists to score goals. Excellent stealing of the ball saw Ryan McEwen making four steals in one quarter. Ryan Geor also had some great off-loads and the team had a very low foul count. Big improvement for Marist after the last game. Cooper Stewart was the top Marist scorer with most boys in the team managing to score. The game ended with a 20-5 win to Marist

The game started evenly with both teams locked at 2 each in the first quarter but Marist slowly gained ascendency during the middle stages to take a 3 goal lead inton the final quarter, but North Harbour fought back in search of their 3rd successive title but some torrid defence saw Marist prevail.

Coach Kieran Hattie was assisted by Luke Melloy . Tim Hunt assisted during the season with trainings. Tim coached the White team for bronze medal at Div 2 Nationals played at the same weekend in Tauranga.

The Marist U14 White Boys team beat out Waikato in a nail biting game which went into extra time after the Waikato coach called an illegal time out, allowing Marist to take advantage of a penalty & score to draw the game 6-6 at full time.  From this point Marist’s speed and fitness kicked in and they took advantage of their opportunities to go on and win 9-6.  Luke Agnew was awarded with an Outstanding Player Award for his efforts throughout the tournament.

The U14 Marist Black Boys team placed 5th winning their final match of the tournament, while the U14 Marist White Girls team finished 7th overall after being placed in a tough pool, of which 3 teams all made the finals.

Congratulations to the Marist Black Team who went to the U14 Nationals Division Two tournament in Hamilton in December 2009. These young men finished third, bringing home Bronze for the Club.

Two games were played on day one, first was Rotorua which we won 8-1. James Beresford was awarded Player of the Game. In the evening we played Palmerston North Boys High School, another good win with a score of 9-4, this time it was Max Hunt's turn for Player of the Game.

After a good night's sleep (yeah right) it with time to play North Harbour C. This was always going to be a very tough game! First quarter saw the score at 1-2 to North Harbour, second quarter it was 2-3, still to North Harbour. At the end of the third quarter North Harbour was still ahead at 3-5! A good talking to by Coach Kieran saw the boys pull out a win with two goals scored in the last quarter making it a draw 5-5.

Friday saw us playing Hutt in the morning which was won convincingly with a score of 15-2. The semi-final in the evening was against Palmerston North Boys High School. Another hard game, but the boys put their hearts and souls into it! The score was 0-3 in the first quarter, 2-3 in the second, 4-5 in the third quarter and this was how it ended up 4-5 to Palmerston North . . . if only we had another quarter!

The play off for third place was against Rotorua with the final score being 9-6. James Beresford was presented with the Outstanding Player Award. Well done James!

Coach Kieran Hattie managed to keep these boys focused and keen to win for the entire tournament. No junk food, Red Bulls, Demons or Coke were allowed and the boys respected that. Kieran has a new nick-name 'King of the Time-Outs' (as given by the parents who were part of the cheering squad)! He called these at crucial points in the game, and apparently he wasn't always telling the boys what to do! Very special thanks to Lisa Chandler and Sally Herbert for their fantastic parent support - “ couldn't have done it without you girls.... Wendy Deadman Manager

2008 U14 Development Tournament - Rotorua

01.09.2008 Hey we got bronze . Score 5 to 2 “ –in the Minor semi-final against Rotorua. - Kyle Hattie, Coach

SEMI FINAL SHOCK LOSS FOR MARIST

18.12.2006 Marist Red had a head start in the round robin drowning Southland 21 – 3 and NorthSport B 18 – 2. Tauranga was no match either (12 – 1). After another convincing win over Harbour City (16 – 7) NorthSport A put on the expected challenge in the final game of the preliminary round. After being up 5 – 2 in the second quarter NorthSport came back to even the score at 6 – 6 by the final whistle. The draw was enough for Marist to secure the semi final berth against Maranui. The team from Wellington forced the game into overtime with two goals in the last 20 seconds of the final quarter of a breathtaking clash. After overtime did not provide a winner a penalty shoot out had to decide and it took 7 shooters until the game was decided. Marist second miss meant the end to their championship campaign. The team struggled from that dramatic loss and failed to recover in time to claim the bronze leaving the medals to NorthSport.
