Marist Auckland Water Polo

2016 Season

24/07/2016

Hi

Welcome back to term 3 of Marist U12 water polo.

I hope you are all well rested and had a great holiday.

Pan Pacs is now over, I saw a few of our U12s coming to watch – I hope you learned something – and thank you for your support.

There were 151 teams with over 1500 young people playing – a massive competition – and from our coaches we manged to get:

Kian McAllister-Sim – bronze in U14 boys

Ryan McEwan – Silver in 18 boys

Congratulations to you both.

U14 Auckland League begins next week – and some of our U12s will be playing in that – so good luck to them.

U16 Auckland League will be running at the same time, and a few of the coaches will be playing in that – so good luck to them too.

Year 7/8 League starts again next Friday – and I know that most of you will continue playing in that  - so good luck to all of you.

It will be a very busy term of water polo!

The focus of this term is preparation for The Tournament of Olympic Hopefuls – henceforth to be known as TOH J

Cynthia is constantly looking at the children, during the last tournaments and assessing them for the correct teams/grades.  She will be looking at everybody again the first week, including the new children, and hopefully, we should have teams for TOH after that.

Children may be moved between grades as appropriate.

I need to hear from these children to see if they are available for selection for the Olympic Hopefuls tournament 24 – 26 September.  If I don’t have confirmation, or communication by the end of next week, your child can’t be considered for selection, as Cynthia will be making team selections after week one of training.

The focus of this term will be the final major U12 tournament of the year – The Tournament of Olympic Hopefuls – to be known as TOH – so I don’t have to type that all the time!

We again may  limited in the number of teams that we will be able to send. We will know how many teams we can send hopefully soon.

The cost of this tournament  will be approx. $100 per child - TBC

To help Cynthia work out the teams, in the first instance, we need to know your  child’s availability to play that weekend.  Please let us know a definite yes or no J  This includes all new registrations.

Can you please get back to me – by the end of this term, being Friday 8th July, as to whether your child is available to play, or not.  If I don’t hear back from you by then, we will assume that your child is not available for selection.

Hi

I hope you have all had a good break, and the Tauranga kids are fully rested.

Please find attached the squads and times for this Sunday.

C grade: 9.30 – 11.30

B grade: 11.30 – 1.30

A Grade: 1.30 – 3.30

This may change next week . A & B may swap  - to be confirmed.

Cynthia will meet with all parents at the beginning of each session to explain team selection – please be available for 5 minutes for her to talk with you.

There will be no goalie training this week – that will begin  next week (8 May).

We are able to enter 8 teams into Mountford Park. J

If you don’t see your name on any of these lists – please contact me.

It will most likely be that you are new – and Cynthia would like to see you at the B grade session 11.30, to evaluate you in game situations. Please make yourself known to her and let her know your name.

Going forward, Marist U12 will be accepting new registrations, and those children will be  welcome to train, but only children who have registered, paid and trained or played in term 1( and new registrations/training towards the end of term 1) will be considered for team selection for Mountford park and Olympic Hopefuls, we feel that this is the only fair thing to do with such large and growing numbers.  Basically, now is our cut off point for team selection for  the rest of the year.

If there is space in teams, new registrations will be considered.

Payments

The cost for term 2 training, for those who have already paid and trained in term 1,  will be $120.

For new players, it will be $170 – this includes a one-off registration fee of $50 to NZ and Auckland water polo.

If you are unsure which amount you are required to pay – please get in touch.

For those children that will be playing in the Mountford Park Tournament – the cost of that will be approx. $100 – to be confirmed once teams are confirmed. Payment is required once the teams are confirmed.

Marist Shirt and togs must be worn to play in the tournament, these can be purchased next term, and questions about uniform – contact Leanne Hughes

Boys Togs            $55

Girls togs             $85

Shirt                       $55

As I have said before, I don’t have access to the club bank account, so I rely on you telling me when you have paid.

Please make payment to:

12 3016 0507950 00

Use ref:

U12                        initial & surname  eg D Ryan        Term 2

When you have made payment, can you please advise me straight away by email of:

Child’s  full name

Date of a payment

Amount paid.

Payment for term 2 must be made on or before 30 April 2016.

If you are having difficulty making this payment in time, please advise me,  by email – in confidence.

I don’t want to be following up 70 families, over and over,  like I had to last term.

There are some parents who have a credit from overpayments etc from term 1 – I have contacted all of them..

If you aren’t going to be training this term – please advise me, and I won’t expect any payment from you.

If you no longer want to be on the U12 registration list – please let me know.

Message to any NEW term 2 registrations.

2016, Marist has had an unprecedented start to the season.
Term 1 we had over 100 players register and train with us for the Tauranga Tournament. Marist is being limited by the tournament organisers in the number of teams we are being allowed to enter into each competition.  For the Tauranga tournament Marist was limited to 7 teams. We expect that for Mountford and The Olympic Hopefuls we will again be limited.
Marist has no control over this.

In order to ensure fairness to those that have been in the program from the start. Those players that have registered in term 1 will be given preference to tournament teams over any new registrations.
We are working hard to try and get extra entries but there is no guarantees.

All players are welcome to train and learn new skills in our program.

Term 2

We still don’t know how many teams that we can enter into Mountford park – so please be patient with us until we know.

19/02/2016 - Update

After the muster on Sunday 14th February, children were assessed and 3 training groups have created.

Training Sunday 21st Feb at Sacred Heart College:

Group 1                12.30pm  -  2pm

Group 2                10.30am – 12pm

Group 3                9.30am – 11pm

If you do not know which group you are in, please contact Rachel Ryan

Please note that training time has been extended, again, until 1.30pm – so training is 10am – 1.30pm

Hi

The first session is coming up very quickly.

There are quite a few points to cover, so please make sure that you read the whole email.

We will be meeting at 10am – please don’t be late.

The first part of the session will be and introduction by myself, and Cynthia Sturm, the head coach. – she will explain the structure of training and how it will all work. Then we will sort the kids into ability groups, and then do some dryland warm-up before we get the kids in the pool at 10.30. (the pool  is in use before then)

I would suggest that they come wearing their togs under their clothes.

There will be a swimming component to this session, so they should being their goggles.

This year, we have had a very large number of registrations to Marist water polo, so we have a very large group of over 80 kids to sort.  The first week will be a rough selection process into 2 ability groups – and, in subsequent weeks,  the 2 groups of 40  will be training at 2 different time-slots on a Sunday morning. The coaches will assess the children this weekend and will decide with Cynthia which child is appropriate for which group, and you will advised which group your child is in.   Children may be moved up or down within these groups as appropriate.

With regards to Tauranga – if you haven’t done so – can you please get back to me with availability asap.

We are only able to accommodate  a maximum of 55 children in Tauranga for the tournament at the end of term 1 – please see below for details.

Because of this, and the large amount of children participating this year, teams will be selected on ability, out of the list of children that are available to go to Tauranga.

There will be a waiting list after these 55 children, and should anybody drop out, children will be offered a place in a team, if it is of the right ability level.

Fees:

Fees for each term will be $120.  in addition , all players are required to pay a one-off additional $50, which is the player registration fee  to NZ Water Polo and Auckland Water Polo.

Therefore, the fee for this term will be $170.

Please make payment of $170 to:

12 3016 0507950 00

Please use reference: U12           players initial and surname – eg D Ryan                 Term1 fee

Most importantly – I have don’t have access to the club account to see if this has been paid, until I liaise with the treasurer – so can you please email me as soon as you have paid – telling me the date , amount and your child’s full name and surname.

This is very important, so I don’t have to follow up payments – and we have over  80- families – which is a lot of kids to follow up!

Payment is due now.

Tournament:

Until we have finalised numbers, I can’t give an exact cost for the tournament.

But, we are asking for a non-refundable deposit of $120,  to be paid to:

Please make payment of $120 to:

12 3016 0507950 00

Please use reference: U12           players initial and surname eg D Ryan                     deposit

Please make this payment separately to the term fees.

For those children that are available to go to Tauranga, please make this payment – again, please email me with details – as above. J

For those children that are not selected for Tauranga,  this amount will be refunded. To reiterate, there will be a waiting list in operation.

Please read the link to the document of the club’s selection policy.

Selection Policy - Click here

The Tauranga Tournament  for term 1 will be the first weekend of the school holidays   - Saturday – Monday  16/17/18 th April .  Children will be expected to stay over the Friday night 15th April.

We have booked the Papamoa Beach resort/Top 10 holiday park.

Accommodation has been booked for 55 children.  Parents are to transport their own children.

The cost of this tournament  is not expected to exceed $400 per child.

This includes, accommodation – 3 nights, food ( Friday dinner, 3 meals Sat/Sun – b/fast and lunch on Monday) ) , tournament and coaching fees.

Please let me know asap if you are available to attend the Tauranga Tournament, so we can assess numbers, and this helps greatly with team selection.

If you are definitely NOT available to go to Tauranga   - please let me know also.  You are most welcome, just to come along and train if you wish. Training will involve a games component.

Uniforms:

I will have a selection of sample togs for you to try on, on Sunday, and the shirts will be available shortly for trying on.

I may have a few second hand items that come up occasionally.

If you are selected for a team, you are required to wear Marist togs and a Marist shirt.

These can be ordered from the website.

Parent and child behaviour:

Please find attached a link to club policy on parent behaviour and children’s behaviour.

Basically, please be well behaved – this includes the parents – please don’t side-line coach during training or games, please do not approach the coaches. If you have any questions, or issues, please see either myself or Cynthia – please do not approach your child’s coach, or other children. In the instance or tournaments  – the team manager or head coach or myself are to be approached. Never the team coach.

Player, Parent Guideline - Click here

Please note again that training time has been extended again, until 1.30pm – so training is 10am – 1.30pm. Please be on time – we have 80 plus children to organise, and we need to use this first session to talk to the parents and children and get the children sorted and  in the water.

If you want to take your child home before 1pm, that is fine – we have so many children that we need to be able to assess them all adequately..

 Points to note:

·         Make sure finger and toe nails are trimmed

·         Bring a water bottle

·         Girls to bring a swim cap

·         Bring a substantial snack – they will get hungry and tired.

·         Bring goggles ·

·         Don’t forget your togs! ( no board shorts or rash tops please J )

   No jewellery

I apologise for this HUGE email! I had to cover quite a lot.

If you have any questions, please get back to me.

Training for this year begins on Sunday 14th February at 10am – 12.30 pm at Sacred Heart College Pool.

•    Please be on time, we have a lot of children attending this year, and would like to get them sorted into ability levels and training asap.

You are an integral part of the team machinery – a very big thanks to you.

And lastly, a huge thank you to the wonderful coaches, Jez, Cytnthia, Ryan, Adrian, Ben and Natalie. Update from the final day:

Marist Sharks made it into the A Grade final against Tauranga  with a strong victory over SeaWolf. A tense final followed with each goal being matched ending in a 3 all draw. Unfortunately Tauranga won the penalty shootout and took gold. But Marist were gracious in defeat.
Will Bason and Bynn Wilson, as outstanding tournament goalie, were selected for the tournament team, with Will making Tournament MVP – congratulations Will – especially as Will had been fighting a bad cold for the last 2 days. If they were giving gold medals for cheering – Marist would have won outright. Led by our head cheerleaders, Jacob Ryan and Ben Gardner (U14 big brothers), they lead the squad in outstanding cheers and support which lifted everybody’s game. Not one other team had a cheer squad like them! The Stingrays finished 8th  in the B grade, drawing their last 2 games and playing better and better each time, and the Dolphins finished 6th in C – both teams showing huge growth in ability and team play throughout the tournament. The kids were all extremely well behaved over the 3 days, at the pool and at camp – they are a credit to the club. A big thank you to all the coaches, Jez, Cynthia. Ryan and Natalie – you did an outstanding job with the kids, and the team managers, Pete, Peter and Paul – and Camp leader Jane Danielson – who all stepped up and helped with everything as I was laid low with the flu whilst in Tauranga. Next stop: Mountford Park, Queens Birthday Weekend. Rachel

Update from the Under 12 tournament in Tauranga

The kids are settled in and are having a blast . The sharks won all their 3 games well. They share the top spot with 3 other teams. There are 5 big games to get thru tomorrow . The stingrays lost their first 2 and almost won their last, but list by 1 point due to sone gaps in defense- a good work on for their 5 big games tomorrow . The dolphins lost all 3 games, but are playing more cohesively each game. Looking forward to a very busy day of wp tomorrow. Rachel

We watched the Swordfish v Dolphins on Monday play off for 5 & 6 place in the C Grade , with the Swordfish coming away with the win ,well done to them all with a large number of young kids .

The Barracudas ,went into battle in the C Final against NHWP Blue ,they were down at half time ,they fought back to 3-3 ,in the last 10sec NH just popped the ball in the goal, fantastic game ,with the

The Stingrays played Waikato in the Bronze final  winning this game with ease 5-2, Bronze for the Stingrays .

The Marlins played NHWP Black in he final of the B Grade ,ready to beat them after they drew 3-3 in there very first game of the tournament ,they all played their heart out , under the guidance of their coach Josh Melloy ,with an outstanding result 6-3 ,they bought home the Gold .

15.06.2010 Under 12 Mountfort Park Tournament, Queens Birthday Weekend 2010

Another exhilarating and exhausting long weekend has come and gone.

Saturday June 5th saw two eager Marist Teams arrive at Manurewa Aquatic Centre for the 2nd Under 12 Mountfort Park Tournament.

After 13 and 14 games respectively over 3 days the Marlins were 9th and the Sharks a credible 4th. It was great to see our children having such a fun time and enjoying themselves.

The Marlins were nicknamed the Squirts by all the other teams as they were all so small, ( many were only 9 or 10 ), and not once did they give up and they always had smiles on their faces.

Congratulations to Nick Gibbons who was named a MVP ( most valuable player ).   .... D. Hargraves

Pan Pacs.

The committee wish to advise under 12 players and parents that under 12 players will not be permitted to play in the 2010 Pan Pacific Tournament. The main reason for this position is that the committee wish to give all under 14 players a chance to compete in the Pan Pacific Tournament. The Pan Pacific Tournament is a 2 year event meaning that this years under 12 players will get a chance to play in the 2012 Pan Pacific Tournament. Marist had originally entered two under 14 girls teams and 2 under 14 boys teams into this years event. It is our understanding that all NZ clubs will be told that they will only be able to enter one under 14 girls team and one under 14 boys team this year, due to the number of overseas teams entered into this age group. This means that Marist will have a possible 15 places available in the girls team and 15 places in the boys team. From the muster held last Saturday, we have 21 girls and 27 boys registered, for this age group. (those under 12s that did register are not included in these numbers). The committee believes that the Under 12s currently have a full program with three tournaments throughout the year and would be better suited to concentrate on developing their skills and doing well in these three under 12 tournaments. The committee thanks you for your understanding.

Under 12 Tauranga Tournament April 10 - 12 2010

Saturday 10th of April dawned another clear beautiful day and by midday 28 children and their families had converged on Tauranga for the annual Under 12 waterpolo tournament. All three Marist teams had 6 games that afternoon to determine what pools they would be playing in for the rest of the weekend. Sunday was another fine day and teams played 5 pool games each. Monday followed with 2 teams having more pool games and then all teams playing a placement game and then a final game to determine their final places. We had 1 team in each pool and finished with a 6th, a 12th and a 17th place from a field of 22 teams. Great fun was had by everyone and we have some budding new waterpolo players coming up.

Sharks
This was the first tournament for the year for the under 12's and the first time the Sharks had played as a team, they had an excellent first day winning 5 out of 6 games, leaving them in the top 8 of the competition of 22. The next day was tough losing all their games, they still however ended up playing Harbour City for 5th-8th playoffs. With a bit of grit and determination the team bet Harbour City 4-3 to win a place in the 5th-6th finals. Mountford was too tough in the final beating the team 5-1. The Sharks did really well considering this was their first time together , many of the parents commented on what they felt were a lovely bunch of children and what a fantastic team approach was seen in the pool. Well done to the Sharks, roll on the next tournament! ... Jane Gibbons Team Manager

Marlins

The Marist Marlins had a great weekend in Tauranga.
Saturday saw them lose two games and win three. An excellent start for them, giving the players time to get to know each other, their strengths and for those who had not previously played any water polo games some much needed experience giving everyone the confidence they needed to move into the B Division for Sunday.
Sunday proved a little more difficult with the Marlins losing 3 games and winning two. This put us in the play off for 1st to 4th in the B Division on the Monday draw. The Marlins came together well as team on Monday, they all showed immense improvement and shouted the spectators to the most riveting game of the weekend when they came up against the leaders of the pool, Maranui. At times it looked like we were going to draw this game, we, the spectators were hoping for an upset, but for every goal we scored Maranui scored another. The Marlins came 4th in the B Division after narrowly losing by 2 goals to North Harbour White. ... Patricia Mau Team Manager

Dolphins

The Dolphins had a wonderful weekend which started slowly and ended brilliantly.
Saturday was tough as many of our players had never played water polo before and we took a while to really get into it, winning only one game this day and therefore ending in the C Division. Sunday dawned with a draw first up and then a loss. Following a team photo and a great team talk we then went on to win all the rest of our games and therefore winning C Division.
A great experience for all involved learning how important it is to play as a team and to get everybody involved. ... Deryn Hargraves Team Manager

Many thanks to all the families who came, for their help and support over the weekend. To our Coaches for giving up their time and for their efforts with our children and to our team managers Jane and Trish for their full support. Special thanks must go to Moira and Wendy for all their efforts ensuring that we were all fed so well. Deryn Hargraves

2009 Under 12 Olympic Hopefuls

10.10.2009
Marist Sharks:
Had a tough first game playing North Harbour. They started off well with it being 2 all at one stage, but North Harbour pulled away 10-3. The next game they played Waitako winning 6-5. In the last game of the night they played Tauranga Quicksilver where they got off to a flying start going into the half 7-0 up and in the second half they put the foot off the gas winning 8-4. The second game saw them playing Harbour City, once again they started off well going up 7-1 into the half, but once again they slowed down winning 9-4. With their next game against Waitakere going to decide who will end second in the pool they went into the half only down by 1 goal then started off the second half scoring the first two goals rounding off with a 9-6 win. With only a 30 minute break they played Mountfort Park Pukekos playing one of the better games leading from start to finish winning 10-1. The last day of the tournament they had to played North Harbour in the semi finals losing 10-1 playing one of their off games but they kept their heads up saving their best game for last beating Hutt 8-5 for the bronze medal, leading from start to finish. As the tournament went on, every player was getting stronger and stronger. Jimmy Boyce was named in the Tournament team

Marist Dolphins
The dolphins had a very tough tournament playing in the A grade, playing against all A teams. As the tournament went by they improved and by the final game they were keeping up and scoring amazing goals. It would have been a valuable learning experience for them and lots of fun.

Marist Marlins
Marist Marlins had a fantastic tournament and played to their full potential everyday. Unfortunately Marist Marlins lost, 5-4 to North Harbour Yellow, in the final minutes of their quarterfinal game. They fought hard in the 3rd and 4th play offs, losing in extra time, golden goal to Waitkato B 4-3. Again they would have learnt a lot from the tournament which they will use in the future.

Olympic Hopefuls Tournament

14.10.2008  The Mighty Marist Racing Sardines, Power Polo in a can.
                              - Ben Simperingham

As the youngest members of the under 12 squad, it would be fair to describe the Racing Sardines as the babies of the Marist Waterpolo Club. Although many of our team members are veterans of the flipperball circuit none of us had been involved in a waterpolo tournament before this weekend. After a solid term's work at Sunday morning trainings under the watchful eye of assistant coaches Brittany and Josh and with regular training matches against our older stablemates the Polo Bears, our side of prime 9, 10 and 11 year old aquatic talent was uncertain what lay ahead as we approached the Tournament of Olympic Hopefuls but we knew we were looking forward to it.

On Saturday morning after controversially failing to win the best banner competition we surprised ourselves by taking an early lead in our first match when Alex hit the back of the net against the North Harbour Pukekos.  Further goals to Anna, Jackson and Ryan as well as some truly awesome defensive work by "Mr Steals" Vinay and a number of blocks by goalie Ollie secured an unexpected 4 - 0 victory.

In the afternoon's encounter against the North Harbour Tuis Ryan scored from a counter attack early in the piece to give us a 1 - 0 lead and hopes of a second victory were high. Unfortunately the Tuis then managed eleven consecutive lucky goals, despite some good work in the cage from Claire, and we failed to add to our tally meaning the Sardine's unbeaten record was a thing of the past.

The lessons of Saturday afternoon's loss were well learned as we put together a vastly improved match on Sunday morning and came from behind to take out a nailbiter against Waitakere III by 5 goals to 4. Ryan, Jackson, Molly and Annabelle contributed on the scoresheet, Rupert and Robbie were prominent on defence and the whole team rose to the occasion.

After an hour's break a tired Sardines team took to the water against the top ranked Polo Bears and started to play some phenomenal polo. We managed a lead twice in the first half, and changed ends with the scores all tied up. We tired in the final minutes and the score ended up at 7 - 4 but this was a tremendous result for the young Sardines.

Thirty short minutes later we were back in the water for our third match of the day and our first of two against the Mountford Park Manus. We were having a tough time on attack as the Mountford keeper made block after block and their shooters were regularly finding the top corners so a 9 - 4 loss was the final score.

Our victories were enough to see us into the 3rd 4th play off match against Mountford again on Monday morning. Team captain Ryan found his mark twice in the first half and great defense from Bella, Stacey, Vinay and Shara kept the score at two all at half time. Neither side could find the net in the following ten minutes so we were heading to golden-goal-sudden-death-Olympic-style-next-goal-wins-polo time. After a tense couple of minutes play Ryan put a long ball forward to Annabelle who sprinted down the pool and made no mistake finding a big fat bag of bronze in the back of the goal.

At this point in time the pool staff called noise control as the Sardine Supporters School lifted the roof recording an illegal 92.7 decibel cheer. Many thanks to Penny, Penny and Ian for their quality management and to Keegan for pulling me out after I "fell in" at the end of the last match.

U12 TEAMS CLAIM TWO MEDALS

26.09.2007 The club’s Under 12 players had their final games for the year at the Tournament of Olympic Hopefuls held at the Millennium Institute from 22-24 September. In front large and vocal crowds Marist pocketed two medals.

The coaches wished that they had as much support for their games as the crowd gave our youngest players. Teams from as far away as Otago and Hutt came to join in the festive atmosphere and take on the northern teams.

It was a very successful tournament for us with our Sharks team taking the A division silver medals and Braeden Drennan taking the trophy for most improved player during the tournament. What is great for the club is that many of these players will still be eligible for the under 12 grade next year.

One of the most exciting games of the tournament was between our own Marlins and Kingfish, playing of for third and forth in the second division. Following a full-time draw the game went to golden goal, with the Marlins taking out the bronze medal.

Many thanks to the coaches, Kieran Hattie, Tim Hunt and Tim McVicar and Barbara for the article.

MARIST U12 TAKE BRONZE IN TAURANGA

17.04.2007 The youngest members of the club had their first outing of the year over the weekend of 13-15 April, with the annual under 12 tournament. It was hosted by Tauranga Water Polo Club, in chilly weather in the outdoor pool at BOP Polytechnic. 64 people went down - made up of two teams and their supporting families.

The Marist Marlins (photo right) had the opportunity to develop their game skills under the tutelage of Nicole Lewis and Lachie McNoe, and gave all the supporters a fantastic spectacle, missing out on a place in the plate semis, having gone to a golden goal thriller play off.

The Marist Sharks (photo below), coached by Matt Selkirk, confidently played through a cold Friday evening under lights, to finish top of their pool and went through to finish third place overall in the championship. Two Sharks players, Akira Ioane and Braeden Drenan, were named in the tournament team.

The Under 12s will now have a small rest except for some occasional games and regroup with additional people for a Spring programme in late July to prepare for the Tournament of Olympic Hopefuls to be held  September 22-24th in Auckland

Marist was represented by three teams with the Sharks considered the strongest side missing out on the semi finals narrowly. Francesca Dorman was named MVP for the Sharks who finished 5th after taking ‘revenge’ on Waikato in the 5th/6th play off.  The Marist Merlins (photo below) came 11th while the Marist Seagulls had to settle for 16th. All teams had an awesome time and showed incredible skill and teamwork in a tournament that was widely regarded as very competitive and of high standard.  The teams would like to thank Matt Selkirk and Tim Hunt for their wonderful coaching and are looking forward to U14 next year.
