Marist vrs Waitakere - 18:04:2013

Thursday evening provided another opportunity for the women's team to improve their performance heading into Nationals in Wellington in a couple of weeks...The starting team made a great start in the 1st quarter scoring 3 goals I each to Nicole, Anaelle and Sam.  Annabel added another goal in the 2nd quarter enabling the team to be up 4-1 at half time.
In the second half Waitakere worked hard to come back from a 3 goal deficit but the Marist team worked hard to defend their score  and kept Waitakere scoreless in the 3rd.  Anaelle whipped another goal into the back of the net, while Hannah shot cross cage to head into the final quarter 6-2.
The final quarter saw lots of tussling and missed opportunities with each team scoring 3 goals.  Young team members Ricci and Jordan each added goals along with another from lefty Hannah.  The team ended their last round robin game 9-5.
The team struggled at times to be accurate with their shots and will look to improving their accuracy leading up to Nationals.
Thanks to our supporters for cheering us on and to Howard for the great action shots he is taking of our games.

Marist vrs HCMC - 10th March

Today saw a re match against HCMC who had beaten us in a previous game in Tauranga.  The team came out all guns blazing and quickly let the opposition know they were here to play with Nicole scoring 2, Ricci, Sarah and Sam each adding a goal each.  Marist led 5-3 at the end of the first.   The second quarter saw captain Sarah fire in another  2 goals with Jordan also slotting in a lone goal.  Gabby worked  hard in goal making some excellent blocks.
The third quarter proved once again to be a good period of play with Emma gaining a hat trick of goals, Nicole strong at centre forward adding another  and Emily and Sam  both each scoring. With 6-2 in this period Marist now had doubled their advantage 14-7 heading into the last quarter.  In the final quarter although HCMC tried hard to fight back with the younger members of their team Marist continued to exert pressure and put goals into the back of the net.  Sam added 2 to double her goals for the game and Jordan and Nicole each added another to their tally.  The game ended as it had started with the team working hard to keep errors at a minimum and therefore winning 18-9.  The team heads to Wellington next weekend to face both Hutt and HCMC.

Marist vrs Harbour B - 9th March

Saturday evening saw another win to the Senior Women's Team.  Although not one of the best matches played by the team, they still managed to win comfortably.  Their start to the match looked ad though it was going to be a high scoring affair when Marist led 6-0 in the first couple of minutes, but soon slowed with in accurate passing and lack of patience prompting forced errors.
There was a feast of goals with Nicole top scoring with 6.

Marist Magic vrs Hutt Heat - 3rd March

It was a great way to top off the clubs jubilee celebrations with a great win to the Marist Magic Senior Women's team against Hutt. The team got off to a great start with two quick goals to Nicole followed up by great goals from Ricci, Hannah and Sam.  Marist led into the second quarter 5-2.  The second quarter the scoring slowed down.  Although the ladies were provided with nine opportunities, they only managed to put two into the net, both from french player Anaelle.  Hutt in turn scored two goals.  Marist went into the 3rd quarterleading 7-2.
The third quarter proved to be the best goal period for the team who converted 6 of the 7 goals they put up.  The team from Hutt who had already played three tough games during the weekend were beginning to show the effects of this.  Nicole playing strong at centre forward again slotted another 2 superb goals.  Sarah, Emma, Jordan and Sam each added a goal to help push the score further out 13-6.

The pace in the final quarter slowed down with Marist adding two goals, one each to Cynthia and Hannah while Hutt finished the game with more goals.

Gabby again played well in the goal and made 13 great saves.

The game was a well fought match  and the after match BBQ saw both teams mingling and celebrating the end of a great jubilee weekend.

Marist Magic v Waitakere - 24th Feb

Up against the unbeaten Waitakere team, and with three of the starting line up missing for the game, the ladies knew this game was going to be the toughest yet.  The ladies struggled to put goals into the net and with 10 attempts only Anaelle managed to put in on the board which gave them a slight advantage but both teams really struggled to assert any dominance in the quarter.  Marist lead 1-0. The second quarter Marist gained shooting accuracy and were able score goals each to Anaelle, Annabel, Jordan and Sam, while keeping Waitakeres, Emily Cox from using the powerful shoots she has used in previous games to a minimum.  Marist lead 4-1 into the 3rd.  Waitakere worked hard to come back in the third quarteer with 3 quick goals but Anaelle in form again slotted another two goals with one from Sam.  Marist lead 8-4 and went into the final quarter working hard to defend the goals they had scored.  Anaelle and Same sealed the game with a goal apiece and beat the unbeaten Waitakere.

08.06.2010.Marist Magic Goalie takes out MVP.

Congratulations to Marist Magic goal keeper Gabrielle Crothall voted MVP at the 2010 National League Finals.

06.06.2010.Marist Magic Women bring it Home.

The Marist Magic Women confirmed their dominance of the 2010 National Womens League, with a 7 – 4 win over North Harbour in today’s final. Marist has now won this title 6 times over the last 7 years and now adds the National League title to the National League Shield they will defend in 2011.

The game started tightly as both teams played good defense. Habour opened the scoring after 1min 50, from a 6 on 5, to go out to a 0 – 1 lead, to which Marist replied with a goal from inside to Nicole Lewis with 38 secs left in the quarter. Game even at 1 – 1.

Harbour again took the lead to go up 2 – 1 early in the second quarter before Danielle Lewis leveled it up again, which allowed sister Nicole Lewis to take Marist out to a 3 -2 lead, scoring with 1min 54 left on the clock. Anna Sieprath extended the lead to 4 – 2 with 52 seconds left on the clock, before Lisa Van Raalte scored on the buzzer from half way to take Marist out to a 5 – 2 lead. This golden 4min patch, proved to be the turning of the game.

The third quarter remained tight as Anna Sieprath scored her second goal of the game to take Marist out to 6 – 2 before Habour came back with a goal of their own to make the score 6 – 3, from another 6 on 5 play.

Harbour pulled another goal back to make it 6 – 4 before Lisa Van Raalte scored off the hand for the final score of 7 – 4.

Sarah Pattison, Rachel Swindells, Julie Burns, Sam Schubert were again staunch in defense and tireless in attack. While Gabby Crothall was again brilliant in goal.

Congratulations to Paul Swindells, Michelle Casey, Gabby Crothall, Nicole Lewis, Rachel Swindells, Lisa Van Raalte, Nicky Fraser, Louise Clark, Sarah Pattison, Danielle Lewis, Anna Sieprath, Rachel Burns, Hannah Klein, Julie Burns, Samantha Schubert and the other girls in the Marist Magic Squad on a great season.
The club also extends its thanks to all those family, friends and supporters that made the trek out to North Harbour in support of our teams.

05.06.2010. Marist Magic Women in Finals.

The Marist Magic Women took a step closer to regaining their National League title with a convincing 10 – 4 win over Wellington’s Harbour City Hawks in the first semi final today. Marist’s game was built on some strong defense, which effectively shut the Hawks out of the game, all the while keeping their side of the score board ticking over.

Marist opened the scoring with the only goal in the first quarter to Danielle Lewis. The second quarter saw Marist surge to a 4 – 1 lead after a Lisa Van Raalte goal, followed by Nicole Lewis scoring from center, off a 6 on 5. Nicky Fraser scored from the field with 45 seconds left on the clock, while ex Marist player Emma Stoneman scored for the Hawks.

Danielle Lewis again opened the scoring in the 3rd quarter before the Hawks came back with 2 goals to Sian Ells-Tewhiu. Nicole Lewis finish the quarter off for Marist with a text book back hand shot from center forward to put Marist Magic up 6 – 3.

Marist extended it' lead 7 – 3 in the forth, after Sam Schubert scored, then a clever piece of play from Danielle Lewis took her game goal total to 3 after she stole the ball from the Hawks on half way, passed away to receive the back pass with only the goalie to beat. Marist went out to 8 – 3. The Hawks pulled one goal back before Louise Clark and Lisa Van Raalte added the final 2 goals for the well deserved 10 – 4 end score line.

Anna Sieprath, Rachel Swindells, Sarah Pattison and Julie Burns were also strong throughout the game while the often forgotten Gabby Crothall was solid in goal.

Marist Magic Women will meet North Harbour in tomorrows final 12.30pm MISH, after North Harbour beat Watakere in the other semi final.

Come on Marist !! attendance at the game was a little poor. Lets get there in FORCE !!!! please.

National league

The 2009 National League has concluded. The Men where placed fourth. The Women after winning the Minor Premiership lost in a Penalty Shootout (12-11) in the Final after both normal and extra time where tied. Captain Anna Sieprath top scored with 5 goals in the match.

Auckland Senior league

The Marist Red mens and Senior Womens sides both won the Auckland water Polo Championship. The girls won the Ralph Challenge Shield (first presented in 1918) in emphatic style 9-7. They girls lead throughout over North Sport opening up a 5-1 margin by the conclusion of the first period and never really looked in doubt. They have now won this historic title for the last 8 years-an outstanding achievement. The Red Mens side avenged there fourth placing at Nationals and overcame the National League Champions, North Sport in a tighter game. The men played very well during all four periods, something they had failed to do in the National League. Club Captain, Olaf Adam, was outstanding in the final two matches of the competition.

10.03.2009. MARIST MAGIC BACK.

The magic returned for the Marist Women's side last weekend when they returned to their former winning ways slamdunking the Hutt Heat 18-8 at Sacred Heart Pool. Marist Magic looked in control throughout the game but the score were still tight at the half way mark. But a second half blitz put the Hutt Heat on the back foot and landed the Magic a big win.

Support is needed again this weekend (last weekends crowd was not big enough!!) Marist Magic takes on the Maranui sides from Wellington. The women play 12 noon and the Men at 1.30pm - both games are on Sunday March 15th at the Sacred Heart Pool... Supporters tee shirts on sale again for $20 and there will be the Marist Magic Candy there as well. - Chris Hayward

01.03.2009. MARIST MAGIC IN CLIFFHANGER.

The Marist women suffered their second loss in a week going down 9-10 to the QE11 Crushers in a cliffhanger. The women played a much better game this week and hit the front in the final quarter only to see QE11 bounce back to firstly equalise and then net the winner. The women's team now has to face the Hutt Heat at Sacred Heart on Sunday March 8th at midday...and would really appreciate a large support crew as they face another strong challenge. - Chris Hayward

26.02.2009. MARIST MAGIC VENTURE SOUTH.

The Marist Magic ventures south this weekend to take on the QE11 Crushers in Christchurch during the 3rd weekend of games in the National Men's and Women's Water Polo League. QE11 had a mixed opening set of games with their women's team losing to North Harbour and then turning around and beating Hutt. The QE11 Men were not so fortunate losing to both North Harbour and the Hutt Heat. The games will be played during the South Island Secondary Schools Championships opening up the possibilities of many younger players in the South Island who rarely see a senior men's and women's game to come poolside to watch. - Chris Hayward

22.02.2009 MARIST MAGIC HAVE MIXED OPENING SESSION.

The Marist Magic had a mixed set of opening games to their 2009 National League season at Sacred Heart yesterday. The Magic Women had a shock loss to League newcomers Waitakere going down 6-5. The Magic women drew within one goal of the Waitakere team in the third quarter after being down 1-5 at one stage, but couldn't find the back if the net to equalise. All credit to the Waitakere women as they played a smart game. The Marist Magic Men had a convincing opening win against the Waitakere Blue Devils winning 20-12 in a high scoring encounter which was played at a frenetic pace. Cameron Lowther scored 9 goals whilst Marist recruit Ben Pye netted 3 in his first appearance.

Both teams venture south next Saturday to play the QE11 Crushers in Christchurch, then its back to a home game on Sunday March 8th when Marist hosts the Hutt Heat from Lower Hutt. Thanks to the many supporters who turned up for the Waitakere game - we want to see the stands packed again for the Hutt games where we will have special Marist Magic Rock Candy for all the children and adults to buy, as well as Marist Magic Tee Shirts - The candy will be $2 a bag and the Tee Shirts $20 each. - Chris Hayward

SARAH PATTISON TO PLAY FOR MARIST

For a change Marist isn't losing its top players to overseas clubs but can actually announce a new player transferring to the club. After years of collecting pool entry fees from Marist players at Sacred Heart College Aquatic Centre, New Zealand Senior Women Representative Sarah Pattison finally made the move away from her home club Maranui to Marist Auckland.
Sarah moved back to Auckland in 2003 but kept playing for the Maranui Mudcrabs through to the 2005 season. For the recent Commerce and Science graduate of University of Auckland the decision to turn her back on Wellington was a tough one. "Maranui will always be special to me but to get where i want to be i need to train and I see Marist as the right choice to achieve this." We welcome Sarah in our midst and whish her the very best for the 2006 season.

NEW SENIOR WOMEN'S COACH INTRODUCES HIMSELF

I started playing before most of the current players were born back in 1981 at the freezing cold outdoor Olympic pool in Newmarket with the Newmarket club at under 15 level. Had a hand in starting off AGS water polo in that same year. Played in the AGS team through a 3 season 54 game unbeaten streak from 82 through 84. From that team emerged two provincial rugby players, one All Black half back, one basketball/waterpolo, dual international and a first division lotto winner. Unfortunately I was none of these men.

I did however manage to play NZ schools and NZ seniors in the same year in 1985, after I had left school (school attendance never used to be a selection criteria). I continued to play for NZ on and off through till 91 and scored a staggering no
international goals.

Played in Ludwigsburg in Germany for a month or two in 1986 where I didn't mention the war and achieved an astonishingly poor level of German. I spent a couple of years back in NZ and set up the water polo program for the Henderson Pool and ran that for a couple of years introducing water polo to the schools out west.

From '91 to '96 I moved to France and played 1st 2nd and 5th division there for the Macon and Nancy clubs while developing a taste for expensive wines and smelly cheeses. Also helped out coaching the Nancy women's team who won the French championship three times and made the last 8 in the European Cup.

I retired from goalkeeping and joined Marist in 97 and won my only national titles with them in 97 and 98.

I played for the world's second oldest polo club, London Polytechnic in the English league from 98 through to 2003 and the best we managed was a 2nd during that
time.

I have coached more schools than I care to mention, AGS (while Kurt Goldsworthy was a junior on the bench), Selwyn, Avondale, Kings to name a few as well as Waitakere senior womens and I was also assistant coach at 2 world champs with the national women's side with the highlights being beating the French.

I am currently working as a teacher at Kings College and own a goldfish named fluffy.

I have no strong musical preferences as long as there is a guitar and a drum I'll listen to it, otherwise trance, house, hip hop, rap - you name it I hate it.

2nd at North Islands

Marist Women came second at the Senior North Island Championship played last weekend in
Hamilton. Under the eyes of Hungarian Mens’ National Coach Denes Kemeny the girls had to admit defeat against Maranui in the final. Maranui also claimed the Men’s title beating NorthSport. After Marist leading 3 - 1 Maranui turned the game around a manged a 7 - 6 at the final whistle. More.
